This paper aims to research the main risks to students, Professors, and other workers in the paving industry are exposed due to emissions of fumes and vapors from heated asphalt. For this, a survey was done in the literature and determined through research of various authors in the field, the main compounds that are emitted into the atmosphere in the fumes and asphalt fumes and the possible diseases that result from human exposure to such compounds. The asphalt fumes and vapors have in their chemical constitution, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which may be carcinogenic. To verify the possibility of carcinogenicity of PAHs was made an overview of the major publications in the occupational health area dealing with asphalt emissions. We conducted a survey of the history of evolution of research on the subject. Among the twenty authors surveyed about the carcinogenicity of fumes and asphalt fumes, eleven claim that emissions from asphalt are carcinogenic to humans when there is long-term exposure, five authors state that there are great possibilities of developing cancer and four authors claim no harm to human health. If there is no full assurance of the potential risks posed to human health by asphalt emissions, there must be caution with exposure of workers and researchers to such components.Downloads
