Effects of peripheralization on jobs accessibility levels of the low-income population in Fortaleza

The urban expansion through involuntary socio-spatial segregation, when combined with a process of jobs concentration, negatively affects accessibility to work of certain populational groups. The most impacted segment is the low-income population, since they are subject to socioeconomic restrictions being unable to live in areas more accessible to jobs. Fortaleza faces such problems, with the majority of low-income people living in the West region of the city, far away from the major supply of jobs in its Central area. To a better understanding of this problematic context, this work proposes a method for characterizing and diagnosing problems intensity and mutual dependencies. For that, integrated modelling was applied to quantify indicators, followed by the use of exploratory spatial analysis tools to verify evidences of intra and interrelations between land-use and transport subsystems, supporting the causality hypothesis of the effects of low-income household segregation in the city periphery over their low levels of accessibility to jobs in Fortaleza.Downloads
