Abstract: Pavement design and management procedures take into account deflections data in order to characterize layers. However, data surveying still represents high costs to be paid by transportation agencies. Alternatively, statistical methods employing data from sampled points, may be used to optimize deflection surveying in low and mid volume roads. This paper analyses the use of the ordinary kriging, a geostatistics method, in the estimation of FWD deflections on asphalt pavements in three Brazilian regions. It was found that both deflections and layers modulus present well-defined spatial variability, allowing for a reduction of up to 90% in the sample size, while the characteristic deflection values were not significantly changed. It may be concluded that ordinary kriging is a powerful geo-statistical tool available to engineers dealing especially with pavement management.
