Technical inspections are required activities in the Road Infrastructure Safety Management (RISM) process. This study aims to evaluate the usage of virtual environments for RISM technical inspections, especially for Road Safety Audits (RSA) and Road Safety Inspections (RSI). Two groups of auditors inspected a road segment to evaluate its safety. They followed different methods, a standard field visit and the proposed procedure, that uses virtual reality (VR). The results were compared and statistically tested. There was no significant difference between the groups, which indicates the potential of using VR for inspections. The proposed procedure may bring contributions in terms of safety for auditors, extension of the RSA’s potential because of the possibility of using virtual inspections in the design phases, and, in the future, cost reduction with field visits.
