The investment in sustainable modes' infrastructure in urban centers has not caused a change in demand and has failed to slow down the growing use of cars. Thus, there is a need to understand the subjective determinants of demand behavior that can effectively promote the adoption of sustainable transportation modes. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to assess, through a review of relevant literature, how the three psychological aspects – social relationship, habit, and consciousness – can influence mode choice behavior. These aspects are considered as potential determinants that might contribute to reducing automobile usage. From an analysis of theoretical and empirical studies, the main theories, psychological factors, and hypotheses regarding the relationships of these factors with transportation mode choice were identified. Based on the findings, the study presents a set of hypotheses encompassing the three psychological aspects, which can serve as a basis for future exploration.
