Abstract

What is this thing called Transport? What are its unique features? What is a system and, more precisely, a transport system? Is it possible to formalize a definition of such things? As to provide a clearer definition of Transport Research’s object, this paper addresses those questions and brings new elements into discussion. To debate about Transport, we present promising theories yet to be explored, as a way to provide a more robust theoretic background and a clearer set of definitions. On this scope, we present Mario Bunge’s System Theory and we discuss the notions of transport, transport system, its distinctive
features and its implications on the adequate methods to address those phenomena.

Marcos Thadeu Queiroz Magalhaes, Universidade Federal da Bahia Departamento de Engenharia de Transportes e Geodésia - Escola Politécnica Programa de Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo - Universidade de Brasília

Professor Adjunto (DE) do Departamento de Engenharia de Transportes e Geodésia da Escola Politécnica da Universidade Federal da Bahia. De 2010 a 2013, foi Professor Adjunto (DE) da Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da UnB. Doutor em Transportes pela Universidade de Brasília. Possui graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo pela Universidade Federal da Bahia e mestrado em Transportes pela Universidade de Brasília. Foi bolsista da JICA – Japanese International Cooperation Agency no Curso Comprehensive Urban Transportation Planning and Project, realizado em Tóquio/Japão. Atuou como Gerente de Projetos no Ministério dos Transportes. Tem experiência na área de Planejamento Urbano e Engenharia de Transportes, com ênfase em Planejamento de Transportes e Mobilidade Urbana, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Fundamentos e Técnicas de Planejamento, Planejamento Nacional, Mobilidade Urbana, Sistemas de Avaliação, Regulação de Transportes, Sistemas de Informação Geográfica e Análise Espacial e Fundamentos da Pesquisa e Ensino em Transportes. Dentre os diversos projetos dos quais participou destacam-se: Concurso Nacional de Idéias para o Largo 2 de Julho em Salvador (IAB – Instituto dos Arquitetos do Brasil e Prefeitura Municipal de Salvador) – 1o. Lugar; Plano Físico-Ambiental do Carnaval de Salvador (Universidade Federal da Bahia- UFBA e EMTURSA-Empresa de Turismo de Salvador); Infra-Estrutura Econômica – Sistema de Informações Geo-Referenciadas – Etapas I e II (IPEA); Desenvolvimento de Metodologia Integrada de Suporte ao Planejamento, Acompanhamento e Gestão dos Programas Nacionais de Transporte (Centro de Formação de Recursos Humanos em Transporte da UnB – CEFTRU e Ministério dos Transportes – MT) e Estudos sobre o Transporte Escolar Rural (Centro de Formação de Recursos Humanos em Transporte da UnB – CEFTRU e Fundo para o Desenvolvimento da Educação – FNDE). Atuou, também, no Curso de Gestão Estratégica da Mobilidade Urbana (Centro de Formação de Recursos Humanos em Transporte da UnB – CEFTRU e Ministério das Cidades - MCidades), e na Oficina de Elaboração de Programas Nacionais de Transporte (Centro de Formação de Recursos Humanos em Transporte da UnB – CEFTRU e ESAF – Escola Superior de Administração Fazendária / Ministério do Planejamento).

Atualmente, Professor Adjunto da Universidade Federal da Bahia redistribuído da Universidade de Brasília.
